There are a number of ways in which you can volunteer to help with our activities. Being part of a team is a great way to get to know people in the church and the wider community. Whether it is supporting our Sunday services, or working behind the scenes during the week, we are sure you will be able to find something that is right for you.

Some of the areas where we have teams working together to support the church are below. Please take a look, and if you are interested, let us know.

Church Services

When we come together for worship, we want to give our best, from the welcome that we receive as we arrive at the service, to the smooth running of the service itself, to the coffee and tea afterwards. It takes the combined efforts of a team of wonderful people giving their time to hold our services at St. Andrew’s Church. To learn more about supporting our services, call the vicarage on 01353 725948, or email sohamvicar@gmail.com  (If this link isn't working on your device please copy and paste into your email.)

Children and young people

We run groups for children and young people during the week in addition to the children’s activities during the Sunday 10.00 service. Seasonal Events and Little Fishes are for younger children and their parents/carers held during the week day. For details these and of the children’s activities during the Sunday service, please contact Revd Eleanor Whalley on 01353 725948 or sohamvicar@gmail.com.

We have a Church Choir which sings at the Sung Eucharist. To discover more about the activities of the the Choir, contact Peter Scott on 01353 720201 or email peterdscott@btopenworld.com

Sometimes we assemble teams to do one-off tasks. For example, we meet two to three times a year for a ‘big clean’ of the church, and meet twice a year to clear and tidy the outside of the church.  A call for volunteers for these projects is made both on this website and also on our Facebook page.

We run a number of events throughout the year, for example, the Summer Fete, Ceilidh, concerts and Soham Winter Fayre. To get involved in the planning or running of any events like this, either contact Christopher Palmer on 01353 721920  or for the Fete and Winter Fayre ring Alison Evans on 01638 721534, email: alison.evans7@btopenworld.com .  You can also keep an eye out for a call for volunteers on this website or our Facebook page.

We are active in the local foodbank, which distributes food that has been collected via local supermarkets and uses this to provide three days' supply of emergency food. Volunteers can help prepare the food boxes, collect donations or chat with clients over a cup of tea to signpost them to agencies able to solve longer-term problems. To learn about the different ways to support the Foodbank, either contact 01353 725948 or email, or Ely foodbank.

We follow a safeguarding policy based on the House of Bishops’ Promoting a Safer Church Safeguarding Policy Statement and those working with children or vulnerable adults are subject to a DBS check and Safer Recruitment interview and will need to undergo diocesan safeguarding training. See here for more information on safeguarding.
